Tone's AI assistant, Toni, can read a contract PDF with you and set up a draft contract from it — pre-filling the payee, role, royalty rates, cost rates, deductions, reserves, and linked tracks. Toni lays everything out as a plan first and waits for your go-ahead, and the contract stays a draft until you save it, so you stay in control of what ends up in Tone.

This feature is free for now. Functionality and pricing may change and your feedback shapes what comes next.

Before you start

• The file must contain readable text — a digital PDF or Word document, not a scan or photo of a printed contract. If Toni can't read the file, it will tell you (see Troubleshooting below).
• You'll need access to the Import page (Manage Sales, Manage Costs, or Manage Library permission). See How to Use the Data Importer Tool for an overview of the Import page.
• Advances and links to other contracts (such as a producer's link to the main artist contract, or subcontracts under a summary contract) aren't set up through this flow yet. Add them yourself once the draft is created — advances are recorded as Recording Manual Transactions.

How to import a contract from PDF

1. Open Import from the Library or Costs page (or go to /import).

2. Click Upload File(s) and select your contract.

3. Wait for Tone to analyze the file. When its status shows Uploaded, click ✨ Import with Toni in its row.

4. Tone asks: "This looks like a contract — Create a draft contract?" Click Import as Contract. (If the file isn't actually a contract, click Import with Toni in the same box to chat about it instead.)

   

5. Toni opens with the contract displayed alongside the chat. It reads the document, checks your catalog for an existing payee, contract, and tracks (tracks are matched by ISRC), and asks you about anything ambiguous.

6. Toni presents a contract plan in the chat: contract basics, payee, tracks, and each rate, deduction, and reserve line — with the contract language each one came from — followed by a "What I'd need to create" list of everything new.

   

7. Review the plan and reply in the chat to correct anything — for example, "The payee's legal name is Jane Smith; Jay Smith is the PKA" or "Sales participation should stay at 100%." Toni won't create anything until you confirm.

8. Once you confirm, Toni creates the draft contract, attaches the source PDF to it, and builds out the payee, track links, and terms.
