🧾 Navigating the Costs Tool
The Costs Tool is where you’ll manage and review all of your label’s recoupable expenses. These costs are reported in royalty periods so they can be recouped against contract earnings. From here, you can enter new costs, review existing costs, and control how they’re mapped and reported.

🧠How to Get to the Costs Tool
Click Costs in the top navigation menu. This opens a spreadsheet-style view of all costs you’ve entered.
🗒 Costs Tool Columns
The columns in the Costs Tool include all the key details needed to accurately apply each cost within a royalty period. Here’s what each column represents:
- Description → A short summary of the cost. This text appears on artist statements, so make it specific and clear.
- Transaction Date → The date the cost occurred. This determines which royalty period it belongs to.
- Amount → The total value of the cost, entered in your home currency.
- Type → The cost category.
- Cost types are standardized across all Tone users: Marketing, Manufacturing, Promotion, Travel, Video Production, Accommodation, Recording, Artwork, Legal, Shipping, Remix, Distribution Fee, Other.
- Mapping → Defines who or what the cost is tied to — a contract, track, or release. Mapping a cost to a track or release will split the cost amount across all linked connected contracts according to their cost terms.
- Notes → Add any internal context or reference info for your team. Notes are not visible to payees.
