In order for Tone to pay you the royalties that you’re owed, you must complete the tax information in the Taxes tab on your Payee Settings page.
If you are a resident of the United States, you will need to select the W-9 option and fill out the form:
The most common reason that tax information is rejected is the Full Name field. This must be the name that is used on your tax return. So if you file your taxes under a business name, that is the name that goes in this box:
The second most common reason that tax information is rejected, is the social security (SSN) or employer identification (EIN) number. If you file taxes as an individual, not as a business, you’ll enter your SSN. If you file taxes as a business, you will enter your EIN.
In the example below, I have used a business name, but entered my SSN, so the tax information would be rejected:
For individuals or business entities who do not reside in the United States, you will need to fill out form W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E. Instructions on how to fill these out can be found on the IRS website here.
To claim tax treaty benefits, you must submit a US social security / employer identification number or a foreign tax ID number.
